Geeley Automotive Seeks to Take on the WorldIf you haven't already heard of Geeley Automotive, then you will likely be hearing more about them in the future. Geeley was the first Chinese automaker to display a car for future US sales at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show. This Chinese car created quite a stir at the show. Worries by US automakers of serious low cost competition from China must keep some US automaker executives up at night. With Chinese labor costs as much as 20 times lower than the average US automobile manufacturer's labor costs, it's no wonder that Chinese automobiles can be manufactured and sold for so much less.
The Geeley midsize sedan that was displayed at the Detroit Auto Show is supposed to sell for under $10,000. That might sound like a low price for a new car, and most people like to save money, but whether or not it is a good deal depends on what you are really getting for your money. The big question that still remains is whether or not Chinese automakers can compete on a global level with the quality of US, Korean, and Japanese automobile manufacturers. As with any new product, the old saying "buyer beware" might be appropriate in this situation. In the past, one thing that some Chinese companies have been famous for is making a product that can look good on the surface (from a distance), but upon closer examination it is often found that the quality is not up to the standard that some people might expect. Important details like: fit & finish, materials quality, performance, long term reliability, safety features, and overall refinement may be lacking. Time will tell if Geeley Automotive proves to be better (or worse) than what is typical of some Chinese manufacturers.
