Jetski Engines - The Motivation Behind the MachinesJetski engines have come a long way over the years. Way back in 1973, Kawasaki started the personal watercraft craze by releasing the original Jet Ski 400 - which was powered by a twin cylinder 398cc 2 stroke engine. More recently, the stand up Jet Ski SX-R 800 came equipped with a powerful 80HP 781cc twin cylinder 2 stroke engine. Lightweight watercraft and a potent engine combine to make for a high power to weight ratio on this watercraft.
If you have the need for more speed, then the Jet Ski Ultra 250X sit down watercraft can take up to 3 passengers and boasts a mighty 250HP supercharged, intercooled, fuel injected 1498cc 4 stroke engine. That's more horsepower than many full size boats! Jetski engines have come a long way! Similar to the development of snowmobiles engines, jetski engines have gradually moved more from 2 stroke to 4 stroke engines.
These newer jetski engines have also benefited from technology developed in the motorcycle industry. Producing more horsepower and torque than the earlier 2 stroke engines, these modern 4 cycle jetski engines provide tremendous performance in these personal watercraft. Because of the close proximity of these jetski engines to the water, there is the possibility of ingesting water into the engine resulting in damage. Because water will not compress like air, if water gets inside the engine, it can result in engine damage. Fortunately, these personal water crafts are carefully designed to avoid this problem, but in the past there have been cases where people managed to get water inside the hull and then drawn into the engine. Thankfully, there are companies that sell remanufactured jetski engines for personal watercraft in need of engine replacement.
