A Look at the Mars Candy Milky Way Bar

The Milky Way bar candy bar has been around for a LONG time!  First introduced in 1923, the Milky Way has been a favorite snack food of many people.  Originally made to taste like a malted milk shake, the Mars candy Milky Way was focusing on a taste that was popular back at that time.  The concept was invented by Forrest Mars Sr. and the Milky Way bar was put into production by Forrest's father - the famous Frank C. Mars.  Frank Mars and his wife Ethel started the Mars company back in 1911.  Frank and Ethel began producing candy out of their home kitchen.  It was out of this humble start, that the now enormous Mars candy company has grown.

Mars Candy Milky Way

The original Milky Way bar sold for only a nickel.  The Milky Way candy bar that is sold today is a little different than it's predecessor.  In the United States, it is a nougat base topped with chewy caramel and all covered in milk chocolate.  In Europe, the Milky Way bar does not have the caramel, therefore it is very similar to the American 3 Musketeers candy bar.  In Europe, the Mars bar is more like what is called the Milky Way in America.  There have been some slight variations in the Milky Way products and naming over the years.  Overall, the Mars candy Milky Way candy bar is still true to it's 85+ year heritage!
