Importance of Motorcycle Trailer Tie DownsWhen transporting a motorcycle on a trailer, tie downs are very important to ensure safe transport. It doesn't matter how good of a trailer you have, if you don't secure your bike properly, your motorcycle could tip over and get damaged. It is important to have proper tie down anchors installed on your trailer. The same is true for both enclosed and open trailers.
Anchors for Motorcycle Trailer Tie Downs There are many different tie down anchors available that can be attached to a trailer. There are surface mount type anchors which are probably the easiest to install. Then there are recessed tie down mounts that require a recess to be cut into the wood decking in order to mount them. Both types of anchors can do a good job. The recessed type of motorcycle trailer tie downs mounts provide a little neater looking installation, and they don't protrude much over the surface of the trailer deck. There are various different types of tie down straps available for attaching the motorcycle to the anchor mounts. The cam lock type tie down is probably one of the simplest and least expensive. It is basically a lashing strap. The loose end of the strap is pulled to tighten up the tie down. The cam lock mechanism acts like a one way valve and digs into the strap webbing to keep the tension on the strap tight and secure. Cam lock tie downs should work just fine in most cases. However, if you want to make sure your motorcycle is extra secure, you might want to consider buying ratchet tie downs. The reason is because ratchet tie down straps provide more positive locking, and they can also be tightened more than simple cam lock tie downs. Just be careful not to over tighten the ratchet strap, because the forces generated can be very high. If you over tighten them, It is possible that you might damage something on your motorcycle (or break a tie down anchor).
Ratchet Motorcycle Trailer Tie Downs Some motorcycle tie downs come with soft ends where they attach to the bike. The soft material is supposed to prevent damage to the motorcycle. Whatever method you choose for securing your motorcycle, be sure to factor in the value of your motorcycle. It is not worth trying to save a little bit of money using cheap motorcycle trailer tie downs, and then do a bunch of expensive damage to your motorcycle when it falls over during transport!
