What are the Odds of Dying in a Plane Crash?

Most people have heard that air travel is among the safest modes of transportation.  However, many people also wonder what are the specific odds of dying in plane crash.  How safe is air travel?  There are many different variables that would factor into an accurate computation of the probability that a person would be killed in an airplane wreck.  Let's just assume that we are talking about a modern jet airliner and not small personal planes like a Cessna.  Let's also assume that we are discussing the major airlines operating out of modern airports.  In general terms, the odds of dying in plane crash would be about as likely as a person winning the lottery.  The odds are very small.  In other words, yes it does happen, but it's also very unlikely.

Odds of Dying in Plane Crash

For those wanting more specific details, the odds of dying in a plane crash would probably be somewhere in the order of 1 in 11,000,000.  That's 11 MILLION.  So, it really is unlikely that a person will be killed in a airline wreck.  For comparison, the odds of a person being killed in a car wreck are somewhere around 1 in 8,000.  That's a BIG difference!  Put another way, a person is probably OVER 1000 TIMES more likely to be killed in a car wreck than in an airplane crash.  Again, we are talking about modern airlines operating out of modern airports.  If you fly in a little known airline operating out of a 3rd world country, then there are many variables that can change.  Some of the big issues might be: improper repair and maintenance of the aircraft, less than ideal air traffic control, and uncertain pilot training.  Generally, there is just no way of guaranteeing that a 3rd world airline is operating their planes to the same standard as in modern airlines.  That's not necessarily an issue for most people, since most people that are making this inquiry will not be flying in 3rd world based airlines.  So for most people, the odds of dying in plane crash are very low indeed.  It can happen, but modern airlines still are among the safest ways to travel today.
