Pickup Truck Motorcycle Tie Downs

If you need to transport a motorcycle in the back of a pickup truck, then it is important that you properly use pickup motorcycle tie downs.  One of the most important things to remember is that your motorcycle will only be secure if you have good tie down anchor mounts.  If you have weak anchors, then it doesn't matter how good your tie down straps are, because you will be at risk of dumping your bike over if one of the mounts fail.  Fortunately, there are many different anchors available for pickup motorcycle tie downs.  One of the most convenient tie down mounts for pickup trucks fit right into the factory stake pockets already built into the top of many pickup truck beds.  There are many different pickup stake pocket mounts available.  Some are simple and functional, while others have more advanced features like a retractable anchor point that can be raised for use, or retracted out of sight when not needed.

Another possible anchor for pickup motorcycle tie downs are side bed rails that attach on top of the pickup bed sides.  These side rails can also be used to anchor tie downs straps.  Just make sure you are using a good quality side rail that is strong enough for tie down purposes.  Some truck side rails might be more of a cosmetic accessory and not be strong enough.  Also keep in mind that some trucks might already have factory anchor points already mounted in the corners of the pickup bed.  Whatever you decide to use as your motorcycle tie down anchor, just be sure it is strong enough to do the job!

For attaching the motorcycle to the anchor, there are various different types of tie down straps available.  One of the simplest and least expensive types of tie down is the cam lock type.  The picture above shows an example of a cam lock tie down.  It works basically like a lashing strap.  You pull on the loose end of the strap to tighten it up.  When you let go of the strap, the cam lock acts like a "one way valve" and digs into the strap webbing.  This is supposed to keep tension on the strap tight and secure.  In theory, cam lock tie downs should work just fine, but if you want to be extra careful, you might want to consider ratchet tie downs.  Ratchet tie down straps provide a more positive engagement and they can be tightened much more than cam lock tie downs.  Just be careful not to over do it on the the tension with a ratcheting strap.  The force that can be generated is very high, and it is possible that you might damage something on your motorcycle (or even break a tie down mount).

There are also special kinds of motorcycle tie downs that come with soft ends where they attach to the bike.  This type of tie down strap is especially made with softer material on the end where it attaches to the motorcycle.  This soft material is supposed to help prevent damage to the motorcycle.  Whatever you decide to use, just keep in mind the value of your motorcycle.  Remember, it's not worth trying to save a little bit of money by using cheap or inferior pickup motorcycle tie downs when you have an expensive motorcycle!
