An EGT gauge requires that a small thermocouple probe be installed in the exhaust system as close to the engine exhaust ports as possible. The thermocouple itself is basically the temperature sensor that measures the outgoing exhaust gas temperature. It is important to install the EGT probe BEFORE the turbocharger. You are trying to keep an eye on exhaust temperatures that can result in turbo failure if allowed to reach too high for too long. If you really intend to boost the power output of your diesel truck with a tuner chip, then you might also want to consider a larger exhaust system. The additional power output means that you will have additional exhaust gases exiting your engine. A larger diameter exhaust can help reduce backpressure, increase power output, and also reduce exhaust gas temps. How many semi-trucks have you seen with a tiny exhaust pipe? The newest diesel trucks have much more emissions equipment that make it much more difficult to change out in favor of a freer flowing exhaust.
